Irrigation programming systems

Cañicultores of the Cauca river valley use different systems to program the risks, from direct observations in the field to systems based on the methodology of water balance (BH).

The water balance methodology involves soil-water-plant-atmosphere relationships and losses and gains of soil moisture due to climatic factors or additional water supplies to precipitation.

In the Valle del Cauca it is normal to find areas with surface water table levels and good quality waters that can contribute up to 40-50% of the cane water requirements; therefore, it is necessary to take into account the contribution of groundwater in the programming of water balance irrigation.

Cenicaña has adjusted the methodology of the water balance to the cultivation of cane in the Cauca River Valley and has developed four tools for its application:
