The sugar region of Colombia

The Colombian sugar industry is located in the geographic valley of the Cauca River, between three and five degrees north latitude, in the departments of Cauca, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Quindío and Caldas.

The valley is narrow (between 76 ° 22 'and 75 ° 31' west longitude) and has 430 thousand flat hectares with an average height above sea level of one thousand meters. It has an average rainfall of 1600 mm per year. The average daily temperature oscillation is 11 ° C (between day and night). It does not register harvest periods, that is, it can occur throughout the year.

These particular characteristics of the geographical valley of the Cauca River favor the development of the sugarcane agribusiness, since they provide the initial conditions for obtaining good productivity records. However, in order to take advantage of these favorable geographical conditions, the development of the cultivation of sugar cane must be accompanied by investment in research.
