2016: International Year of Pulses

Legumes are legume plants that have the property of fixing nitrogen and as such can improve soil fertility, improving and lengthening the productivity of agricultural land. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, grain and forage legumes are capable of biologically fixing up to 350 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year.

In addition, as nitrogen fixers, legumes avoid depending on synthetic fertilizers, reducing the carbon footprint and, indirectly, greenhouse gas emissions.

For reasons like this, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) declared 2016 as the International Year of Pulses.
