New PAT training cycle begins

Between the 18 of March and the 10 of April, training sessions for facilitators will be held to assess the damage of the cane borers Diatraea spp.

Cenicaña begins this month a new cycle of training of facilitators of the Program of Learning and Technical Assistance, PAT, with the technology: Evaluation of the damage of the cane borers Diatraea spp. And his control.

The purpose of this training is for participants to develop the skills and abilities necessary to assess the damage of Diatraea spp., with emphasis on systematic field sampling and its control by releasing tachytin flies and wasps Trichogramma.

It is expected that about one hundred professionals of the mills, most of them technical assistants and heads of area and research, will attend the training sessions that will take place between the March 18 and the April 10 at the Cenicaña Experimental Station.

The PAT methodology proposes a shared learning cycle, which is based on knowledge management and the development of skills for the adoption of improved practices in the agribusiness production units.

Following this methodology, participants in this training day are expected to learn to: prepare and coordinate the logistics necessary for the evaluation of the borers, perform the sampling according to the protocol recommended by Cenicaña and estimate the damage caused by Diatraea spp. They will also be able to organize a historical record with the information collected in the evaluation and sampling, select the control measures according to the level of infestation of the pest, carry out the control practices following the recommendations of Cenicaña and estimate and explain the economic benefits of conducting the assessments and biological control of the borers in the cultivation of sugarcane.

After receiving this training, the facilitators are trained to ensure that the technical, administrative and operational personnel employed in the cane producing farms take advantage of the technology, know its limitations and take advantage of its economic and environmental benefits.
