Required: Researcher in watershed management and hydrology

Type of contract: 

An initial fixed-term contract with a duration of one (1) year and with the possibility of an indefinite contract, in accordance with the fulfillment of objectives and work performance, according to the requirements established in the position and the Internal Work Regulations of Cenicaña.

Purpose of the charge

Lead and execute research in water resource management at different scales, integrated watershed management, hydrological monitoring and modeling, design and implementation of strategies to conserve and improve water supply, and manage and execute projects with public and private institutions and communities. The position seeks to integrate, evaluate, and disseminate the impact of conservation actions on watersheds through the use of digital tools, climate data, sensing, hydrological models, and geographic information systems, fostering collaboration and interaction with other Cenicaña programs and areas to generate precise recommendations, disseminate and transfer research results, and promote their adoption by clients and communities.

Requirements:

  • Professional in Agricultural, Agronomic, or Environmental Engineering, with a master's degree in Hydrology, Water Resources, or related fields, and three (3) years of experience in the requested field. Degrees issued by foreign universities must be validated in Colombia.
  • Colombian driver's license B1 or higher.
  • Availability to travel throughout the sugarcane production area in the Cauca and Risaralda river valleys, as well as the Colombian highlands.

Technical knowledge in:

  • Management and execution of research, development and innovation projects.
  • Experimental design, data analysis, and writing of technical reports and scientific articles.
  • Hydrological modeling, geographic information systems, watershed characterization and restoration.
  • Use of data management tools to improve water supply with a focus on natural resource conservation.
  • Specific tools for data analysis and hydrological modeling (e.g. SWAT, HEC-RAS, MODFLOW, CropWat, ArcGIS/QGIS, among others).
  • Specific experience in sugarcane (Preferable).
  • English language proficiency (desirable).

Specific competencies of the position:

  • Design, plan, manage, and lead research, innovation, and outreach activities carried out in watershed management within the soil and water area.
  • Monitor different hydrological components and determine the impact of implementing conservation actions on water and soil resources.
  • Support and advise Asocaña, sugar mills, sugarcane growers, water user associations, and communities in the selection and evaluation of natural resource conservation strategies and practices.
  • To interact on an ongoing basis with employees of sugar mills, sugarcane growers, service providers, universities, state-owned enterprises, and, in general, with those involved in watershed management.
  • Prepare and disseminate reports of results with a scientific structure, participate in work meetings in Cenicaña, Mills and Institutions of the Agricultural Sector.
  • Disseminate and transfer research results through different means to the staff of the Sugar Mills, Growers, Cenicaña Researchers and other related actors.
  • Interact responsibly and adequately with human resources and make efficient use of the physical and financial resources used in the scientific research process.
  • Establish effective working relationships and actively seek collaboration with other Cenicaña research programs, work areas, and services, as well as with external entities (mills, universities, suppliers) to achieve shared goals and enhance results.

General Information

  • Work hours: Monday to Friday from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Includes transportation en route from Cali or Palmira to the experimental station
