Plant health, main topic of the Variety Committee

Personnel from the Cenicaña sugar mills, growers and researchers participated in the field day held at the Balsora farm.

On December 2, Cenicaña held a meeting of the Varieties and Plant Health Committee at the Balsora farm, located in the village of El Bolo, in Palmira, to discuss different issues.

The field day included a tour of the regional test of the 2003 series in which the CC 03-154 variety stands out for dry conditions.

Emphasis was also made on the distribution of Diatraea species in sugarcane crops in the region and on the current status of diseases such as soca rickets, leaf scald and yellow leaf.

During the day, a call was made to use quality seed, for which they insisted on the measures that suppliers and mills must take into account for the establishment of seedbeds.

For his part, the grower Guido López presented the experience of the Balsora farm with clean agriculture, which includes less use of chemical inputs for fertilization, agro-ecological management of insects and the non-use of ripeners.

The event was attended by 80 people, including suppliers and heads of agronomy, field managers and technical assistants from 11 sugar mills in the region.
