As a strategy to increase the productivity and sustainability of the sugarcane agroindustry in Colombia, sugar mills and farmers plan to renew 28.510 hectares of crops.
The varietal renewal process consists of replacing a sugarcane variety that has had several harvests and whose productivity level has decreased compared to previous harvests, with a new sugarcane variety. By carrying out this practice in a timely manner, in addition to having better productivity results, benefits such as:
- Better nutrient absorption and soil conservation, which improves cultivation efficiency.
- Prevention of phytosanitary problems, reducing pests and diseases.
- Land preparation and adaptation to correct problems in soil design, leveling and compaction.
Solutions for agroindustry
Cenicaña currently presents a robust varietal range, which adapts to the specifications of each environment present in the geographic valley of the Cauca River: dry, semi-dry, humid and foothills, this allows for more favorable conditions for making decisions about crop renewal.
In addition, Cenicaña's Analytical Service has developed an economic model to evaluate the profitability of renewing sugar cane plantations.
This model allows:
- Comparing renewal vs. non-renewal scenarios, considering costs, income and productivity.
- Calculate key financial indicatorsand Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR), to measure the profitability of the investment.
- Simulate different cases to determine the optimal time for renewal based on the drop in productivity.
This model is available to any sugar mill or sugar cane farmer, through contact: analitica@cenicana.org
Support in adoption
With the aim of providing growers with key information that will enable them to make decisions regarding their crops, on February 25, 2025, Cenicaña held a space for technology transfer, GTT, at the Risaralda Sugar Mill facilities, where information on productivity and agronomic management of the CC 11-0132 variety was shared, as well as the productivity results of the state III varieties and the series 15 cane varieties planted in that same Sugar Mill.

Sugarcane growers accompanied by Cenicaña professionals, learning about the CC 11-0132 sugarcane variety.
