The current director of the Variety Program, Dr. Freddy Garcés Obando, replaces Dr. Álvaro Amaya Estévez in the management of the Research Center for Sugar Cane in Colombia.

Since July 1, 2019, Dr. Freddy Fernando Garcés Obando, assumed the General Direction of Cenicaña.

After a selection process of approximately one year, the Board of Directors of Cenicaña appointed the current Director of the Variety Program in the new position after evaluating his academic and professional career, which precisely started at this same Research Center in 1996 when he joined as a young researcher at Colciencias and later as a plant pathologist.

At the end of 1998, he began working with the Research Center for Sugar Cane in Ecuador, Cincae; and between 2007 and 2011 he completed doctoral studies at the University of Louisiana,
U.S.

Upon his return to Ecuador, he continued preventive disease management projects, incorporated the use of molecular techniques to select varieties resistant to systemic diseases, and completed field work with markers of resistance to brown rust.

In 2016, he was linked to Cenicaña again as a plant pathologist, a position he held until 2018 when he was appointed as Director of the Variety Program.

The new Director General has the mission of strengthening the research processes currently being carried out by Cenicaña such as strengthening crop management with a focus on Site Specific Agriculture (AEPS), expanding the use of biotechnological tools to improve the development and selection of varieties, implement information technologies at different stages of the production processes, advance the research projects that the Center is carrying out today to contribute to the diversification of agribusiness (ethanol and energy) and the strengthening of initiatives to expand technological adoption in the sector .
