The director general of Cenicaña, Alvaro Amaya Estévez, was recognized as 'Researcher Emeritus 2017', the highest category granted by Colciencias and the country to people who contribute to the development of Colombia from science.
This recognition is added to that granted in the 2016 to Dr. Jorge I. Victoria, former director of the Variety Program, and confirms the national significance of the research carried out in the region and in the Colombian sugarcane agribusiness .
The Director General of Cenicaña is an agronomist with a master's degree in genetic improvement from the University of Kobe, Japan, and a doctorate in genetic improvement from the University of Florida, United States.
Before arriving at the General Directorate of Cenicaña in the 2000, he was director of the Cenicaña Variety Program and researcher of the Yucca Program of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, CIAT.
“More than a personal recognition, it is an institutional recognition because it means that what we do for our cane and mill growers is recognized by the governing body of science in the country as a contribution to the progress of agribusiness and the region in general” , said Dr. Amaya.
The recognition ceremony will take place next June 6 in Bogotá.
