Reed Analysis Laboratory

The cane analysis laboratory is ISO 9001 certified, and is designed to respond to the different investigations carried out in Cenicaña.

Stem analysis and Ceni-AD are carried out, in addition to this it provides support in the different cane quality projects. This laboratory has qualified personnel, modern infrastructure and equipment for the preparation of cane and the determination of components of sugar cane.

The main equipment that the laboratory has are:

Polarimeter

The polarimeter is used to measure the effect of polarized light on optically active compounds. This equipment is used for the determination of pol (apparent sucrose) in cane juices.

Refractometer

Refractometers are optical instruments used to determine the percentage of soluble solids in a liquid solution. The refractometer measures the density of liquids, the denser a liquid the greater the refraction. It is used in the determination of soluble solids in cane juices.

NIR spectrometer for determination of liquid samples and solid samples

The basis of this technology lies in the creation of a mathematical model that relates the NIR absorbance data with the quantitative and qualitative parameters of interest.

Among the main characteristics of this technique are:

  • Analysis speed, which allows to obtain results in minutes.
  • Non-destructive technique, the analyzed products are not altered.
  • Multiproduct and multiparameter analysis: numerous parameters can be analyzed in a wide variety of products, in this case it is used for the determination of pol and brix in cane juices.

Reed shredders

The shredders perform the function of chopping the stem into smaller particulate material, without extracting the juice from the fibers obtained, this process is known as cane preparation to subsequently extract the juice.

Prensa hidráulica

The application of the hydraulic press consists of taking the material shredded from the cane and at a constant pressure (2.300-2.400 pounds per square inch), its juice and bagasse are obtained, in order to establish the quality of the processed cane.
