Strengthening the nutrition and fertilization of sugarcane

Led by Magda Narváez, a soil researcher with the Cenicaña Agronomy Program, a training program on the use of the SEF tool was conducted for a team of six professionals, including heads of agronomy, zone managers, and field staff from the Carmelita Sugar Mill. The main objective of this initiative was to promote the use of the tool, unify criteria on nutrition and fertilization in sugarcane cultivation, and encourage the rational use of fertilizers, while also exploring fertilization alternatives. SAFE It is presented as a technological solution that streamlines the interpretation of soil analyses by considering crucial variables such as productive potential and extraction by variety, which significantly optimizes decision-making in the agronomic management of sugarcane crops.

Innovative practices in sugarcane management

A GTT was held with the objective of promoting the adoption of practices that increase productivity in the crop. The conference brought together administrators, technical assistants, managers, and professional field and supply staff from the Pichichí Sugar Mill. During the day, innovations in equipment for the mechanical weed control, stone removal and buried drip systems. Strategies were also addressed for the management Diatraea in order to prevent losses of sucrose and tons of cane per hectare (TCH), and concepts about the maturation of sugarcane, including the use of drones and software for tracking applications. A key component was the exhibition of commercial varieties such as CC 12-2120, CC 11-0132, CC 09-066 and CC 05-430, along with outstanding varieties from the 2020 series: CC 20-1117, CC 20-1031 and CC 20-1085. Finally, the relevance of the composting plant at the mill, highlighting the commitment to sustainable and efficient practices in sugarcane cultivation.

Field practice in sprinkler irrigation systems

At the farm located in Candelaria, Valle del Cauca, an essential field practice was carried out on traveling cannon sprinkler irrigation systemsThis activity, part of the Irrigation and Drainage course taught by Cenicaña to Incauca staff, was led by Alberto Arroyo, a researcher in the Agronomy Program, and coordinated by the SCTT. The event brought together water resource managers, field supervisors, and irrigation and field quality monitors. The main objective was to update knowledge on technical and efficient irrigation, unify concepts on the importance of irrigation timing and quality in sugarcane, and provide training in irrigation quality assessment methodologies, as well as in the importance of preventive equipment maintenance to ensure operability and maximize efficiency and productivity. Sprinkler irrigation in sugarcane, using sprinklers that distribute water evenly, stands out for its benefits in reducing losses due to evaporation and runoff, maintaining optimal soil moisture levels, and mitigating water stress, which translates into a significant increase in crop productivity.

Irrigation School: Strengthening Skills in Efficient Irrigation

The second training session was held as part of the "Irrigation School," a crucial event for strengthening irrigation skills. This session trained foremen and irrigators who work with suppliers at the Pichichí Sugar Mill, delving into fundamental concepts about irrigation. units of measurement and irrigation efficiencyThe main objective of this initiative is to improve participants' skills by consolidating their knowledge of basic irrigation principles, the operation of various systems, quality control of work, and strategies for optimizing the efficiency of water resource use.
