“Caña Sin Fronteras” in Cenicaña: Latin American collaboration to boost agribusiness

We welcome the network of specialists Cane Without Borders at our Experimental Station. The day allowed strengthen ties of collaboration between technicians and professionals from different countries, around the challenges and opportunities of sugarcane cultivation.

Through guided tours and demonstration sessions, we share research advances y technology results applied in field, harvest and factory that today strengthen the sugarcane agroindustry in Colombia.

Objectives of the visit

  • Continuous improvement in crop production and management.
  • Exchange of knowledge and best practices between sugar mills and institutions in the region.
  • Connecting science and operation to accelerate technological adoption and sustainability.

Why is it important?

The visit consolidates a collaborative learning ecosystem that:

  • accelerates the adoption of proven technologies,
  • facilitates the transfer of methodologies between countries, and
  • promotes a more productive and sustainable agroindustry.

About “Caña Sin Fronteras”

The network promotes:

  • Technical visits between sugar mills and institutions to learn about processes and share methodologies.
  • Meetings and collaboration spaces to solve common challenges.
  • Drive for innovation and the ongoing training of technical teams.

Importance of measuring the carbon footprint of sugarcane

We did?

We make a specialized webinar to highlight why measure the carbon footprint is key in the cultivation of sugarcane and how to convert that indicator into a management tool for decision-making by growers and sugar mills.

The space brought together producers, technical assistants and sustainability teams to share fundamentals, methodologies and good practices that allow reducing emissions, increasing efficiency and better adapting to the climate variability.

What is?

The objective of the event was provide practical tools so that producers:

  • quantify their carbon footprint in the field,
  • identify emission sources in the productive system,
  • adopt sustainable practices that mitigate the environmental impact, and
  • use the indicator to plan, prioritize investments and monitor to the environmental performance of the crop.

Topics covered

  • Climate variability and agriculture: relationships, risks and opportunities for productive management.
  • Carbon Footprint Fundamentals: concepts, scopes (1, 2 and 3) and units.
  • Field evaluation: required data, emission factors, tools and steps for calculation.
  • Contribution and mitigation: Main sources of emissions in sugarcane and practices to reduce them (efficiency in fertilization, waste management, energy and irrigation).
  • Footprint as a management tool: goal setting, monitoring and communicating results.

Why does it matter?

Measuring the carbon footprint allows make informed decisions, demonstrate progress in sustainability, access to most demanding markets and strengthen the resilience of the productive systemEvery step leaves a mark, and ours is moving towards a more sustainable agroindustry.

The #ISSCT2025 pre-congress kicked off with a technical visit to Cenicaña.

The Cenicaña Experimental Station opened its doors to pre-congress visitors. ISST 2025 with a day that demonstrated, in the field and in the classroom, how applied science and innovation are transforming the sugarcane agroindustry toward sustainability and productivity.

What do we experience during the day?

During the technical tour, attendees visited nine seasons that integrate research, extension, and ready-to-adopt technologies. Some of the key aspects shared with visitors were: digital agriculture, efficient nutrition and fertilization, irrigation and agronomic monitoring, soil management, featured varieties, field technologies, harvesting, manufacturing, and the transfer strategies from the SCTT to accelerate technological adoption with physical, digital and interactive materials.

📌 Check out the summaries of each of the 9 stations (in English) here:
www.cenicana.org/apps/dl/precongreso_issct_2025/

The 9 seasons…

  1. Genetic improvement and molecular biology (GENETIC IMPROVEMENT AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY)
  2. Milestones in varietal development (VARIETAL DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES)
  3. Extension and transfer strategies for sustainability (EXTENSION AND TRANSFER STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABILITY)
  4. Smart Factory Solutions: Digital Tools for the Sugarcane Industry (SMART FACTORY SOLUTIONS: DIGITAL TOOLS FOR THE SUGARCANE INDUSTRY)
  5. Digital innovation applied in agriculture (APPLIED DIGITAL INNOVATION IN AGRICULTURE)
  6. Climate-Smart Sugarcane Agriculture: Soils and Climate (SUGARCANE SOIL/CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE)
  7. Tools for precision agriculture (TOOLS FOR PRECISION AGRICULTURE)
  8. SmartCane Operations Center (SMARTCANE OPERATIONS CENTER)
  9. Full utilization of sugarcane by-products (UNLOCKING THE FULL POTENTIAL OF SUGARCANE BY-PRODUCTS)

Why does it matter?

The pre-congress in Cenicaña is a meeting point to share technical evidence, contrast methodologies and align efforts research + extension with a view to a sustainable agribusiness, competitive and resilient to climate variability.
