Cenicaña explores new management approaches in factory maintenance

The Center works on the adaptation of an indicator that measures the global efficiency of processes and is a benchmark for world-class industries

Cenicaña, through its Factory Process Program, launched a project to measure new indicators in factory maintenance processes, with the purpose of supporting the region's mills in their projection as class companies world.

The proposal follows management approaches such as the British standard PAS 55 (optimized equipment management), which is on its way to becoming an ISO standard as a key tool for organizations with a high dependence on equipment and physical infrastructure.

The project, called Maintenance Management in the Colombian Sugar Sector, seeks to support the mills with new approaches to ensure that the equipment used in the factories is reliable and always available.

As part of this initiative, Cenicaña researchers participated in a training on Asset Management (Sena - Asocaña Agreement) and are working on the adaptation of the Global Process Efficiency (OEE) indicator in the sugar sector Colombian; this indicator would allow to measure how close or far an ingenuity is from reaching the levels of a world-class company. Some references indicate that a world-class company is one with an OEE of 0.85; the OEE of the sector reached 0.79 in 2012.

The indicator for the sugar sector would include a combination of maintenance variables and operational variables such as lost time, sucrose losses and energy consumption, among others.

According to Adolfo León Gómez, Cenicaña advisor in mechanical processes, “this type of measurement will allow opportunities for improvement to be identified that translate into a reduction in production costs, increased manufacturing efficiency and finally an improvement in the profitability and competitiveness of the company ”.

KEEP IN MIND

World-class companies are characterized by their high quality standards thanks to the efficient use of administration tools, technology and processes, which allow them to be more competitive.
