In this Technical Series we provide the available information on the variety CC 93-4418, obtained by Cenicaña as a product of genetic improvement research, which contributes to the sustainable development of the sugarcane agroindustry in Colombia.

Selected and recommended by the Research Center for its agronomic, sanitary and productivity qualities in semi-dry environments, CC93-4418 was the third variety with the highest percentage of planted area in 2015 in the geographic valley of the Cauca River and the second most harvested, both on the lands of sugar mills and on the lands of cane suppliers.

The commercial results of the new variety show its superiority over CC85-92 in economic and productivity terms, which confirms the benefits of investment in research and the adoption of technological developments with a focus on site-specific agriculture in the Colombian sugar sector.

As documented in this publication, obtaining and developing a variety of sugarcane requires at least ten years of research and another ten years of validation on a semi-commercial and commercial scale to obtain the expected results. The joint and coordinated work of researchers and users of the technology is one of the keys to success, which is why we highlight the contribution of those who have collaborated in this purpose.
