Gravity irrigation training. "Bonsucro"

Annual reports

In-person event.

Goal

Initiate an awareness process to create a culture of good practices during irrigation execution, strengthen the capacities of irrigation personnel and technicians in the efficient management of water resources, promoting practices that contribute to water conservation through the measurement of flows at the points of collection, conveyance and application of irrigation for decision making.

Within the framework of the project “Strengthening and Connecting Ecological Connectivity Protection Corridors for the Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Amaime River Basin,” three days of theoretical and practical training on gravity irrigation (open channel and pipe with windows) were conducted. These activities addressed the importance of water resources for the sugar agro-industry and presented the general principles of irrigation, with an emphasis on fundamental soil moisture concepts: saturation, field capacity, and permanent wilting point. To facilitate the understanding of these terms, a sponge was used as a teaching aid, allowing for a simple and practical illustration of the dynamics of water retention and availability in the soil, as well as the processes of moisture gain and loss and the estimation of the volume of water applied per hectare. Subsequently, during the practical field phase, participants were instructed in the installation and use of the RBC channel to measure flow rate per furrow. The volumetric method was also used to measure the flow rate in the window.
