SAC recognizes Cenicaña's work

On November 12, during the XXXVIII National Agrarian Congress of the Society of Farmers of Colombia, SAC, Cenicaña presented the Order of Agricultural Merit as recognition "for the valuable work in research, technological development and technology transfer ”.

During the ceremony, the contribution of Cenicaña to the sugarcane agribusiness was highlighted in order to have the highest cane and sugar productivity in the world and it was highlighted that it has been a benchmark for the creation of agricultural research centers in Colombia in other crops and sugar industries on the continent.

Actions to address situation of Diatraea

As part of the actions agreed by the Plant Health Committee to counteract the reports of increased damage to Diatraea spp., between last August and September Cenicaña organized three days of training in monitoring to assess the damage caused by the pest. In these activities, about fifty people participated, including cultivators and stewards.

Likewise, thanks to alliances between companies that supply biological control inputs and farmers, the Research Center initiated a plan of pilot fields in three farms in the region to evaluate the performance of different control methods.

Approaches with the Fraunhofer organization

Representatives of the German research organization Fraunhofer visited Cenicaña last October as part of a tour of different Colombian institutions, with the purpose of exchanging knowledge and evaluating possible cooperation agreements.

The Fraunhofer Society is the largest applied research organization in Europe focused on models of technological innovation related to sustainability, the economy and society.

During its visit, the German mission learned about Cenicaña's technological offer to agribusiness, such as the Technical Recommendations Guide, the prioritized Water Balance program and the PAT, among others.

Renowned world chemistry visited the Center

Gillian Eggleston, a senior scientist at the US Department of Agriculture for research in sugar, biofuel, and bioproducts processes, visited the Cenicaña Experiment Station.

The scientist has been awarded internationally for her contributions to the global sugar industry. One of the last recognizes she received for her contributions to chemistry was the 2011 Iota Sigma Pi Professional Excellence Award.

During her visit to Cenicaña, Dr. Eggleston met with management staff and the Factory Process program to learn about the research perspectives associated with the quality of sugarcane, antioxidants and pyrolysis, clarification, color and microbiology.
