Extension and transfer strategies for sustainability

In order to fine-tune details before receiving the participants of the ISSCT pre-congress – XXXII Centennial Congress 2025, we carried out at the Experimental Station a preparatory essay focused on Cenicaña's extension and technology transfer strategies.

We did?

On the tour of the station dedicated to the Technical Cooperation and Technology Transfer Service (SCTT), the teams shared their journey, work approach, methodology and transfer products that will be presented to the pre-congress visitors. The SCTT articulates producers and researchers to accelerate the adoption of technologies in sugarcane and promote sustainable practices in the Colombian agroindustry.

Strategic programs of the SCTT

  • Technology Transfer Groups (TTG).
  • Integrates: management of the sustainable management of the productive unit.
  • Learning and Technical Assistance Program (PAT): training for technical assistants and producers, diagnosis of limiting factors per production unit, action plans and completion of the Sustainable Sugarcane Guide together with Integra.
  • Circle of Innovative Farmers.

Communication to accelerate adoption

We present a portfolio of technical communications with a hypermedia approach that connect young, middle-aged and older producers through multiple channels:

Digital: Espaitec's “Expert Responds”, website with Solutions for agroindustry and technical services, in addition to newsletters weekly and monthly with activities focused on technological adoption.

Physical materials: Popular series by topic with applicable technologies, books (manuals, guides, chapters), teaching materials (pocket booklets), brochures and banners.

Interactive connected by QR: experiences of augmented reality with best practices and Integra totem for sustainable management (e.g., grounding 0 x 0 to conserve moisture and reduce watering).

Technology Transfer Committee

To follow connecting science with agribusiness, the meeting of the Technology Transfer Committee in Cenicaña. This space strengthens the ties between the areas of technical assistance and agricultural extension of the sugarcane agroindustry, and aligns efforts to accelerate the technology adoption that improve productivity and sustainability of the crop.

Agenda and topics presented

  • Climate context: relevant aspects of the climate variability in the region and its impact on management decisions.
  • Sustainability and integration: joint of the Sustainable Sugarcane Guide with the diagnostic methodology of limiting and productivity-reducing factors.
  • Solutions that generate progress: tour of the tools, services and content available in the Cenicaña website to support decision-making.
  • Success stories with Integra: results and lessons learned from San José SAS, Caucana Agriculture, Riopaila-Castilla, Risaralda sugar mill e Pichichí sugar mill, highlighting improvements in efficiency and adoption of sustainable practices.

Why is it important?

The committee is a meeting point to share evidence, prioritize producer needs and coordinate actions transfer and extension. This allows the sector to advance more rapidly in the smart use of technology, positively impacting profitability, efficient use of resources, and the sustainability of the agroindustry.
