In Valle del Cauca, the 'Water Fund' project is being implemented to guarantee access to water.
In Valle del Cauca the project is being implemented 'Water Fund 'where some 30 academic and public entities and private companies They generate, with sustainable economic and conservation projects, the recovery of the flow of rivers that guarantee access to water.
This initiative, according to Aurelio Ramos, General Manager of Nature Conservancy for Latin America, “It is an example worldwide in countries where Water Funds such as the United States and some in Africa are implemented".
"In Valle del Cauca this initiative began around 2011 with Asocaña and the accompaniment of the Nature Conservancy where we were able to identify the problems that existed with droughts, floods and sediments in some rivers that drain their waters into the Cauca River", he explained .
He stated that, with different methodologies, “we managed to demonstrate to the company and the community that it was more beneficial to make restoration investments in the upper basin of the rivers instead of continuing to mitigate and have all those damages in the sugar cane, product of the drought and the floods ”.
In 2016, the Fundación Fondo Agua por la Vida y la Sostenibilidad then signed an association agreement with the environmental authority of Valle del Cauca - CVC, to restore more than 3.000 hectares in 11 river basins from 10 municipalities of Valle del Cauca.
These projects, in addition to the resources of private companies and public entities, receive international financing.
He explained that “the key to the success of this project ”was the leadership exercised by Asocaña (economic union of cane producers) to make visible and engage other public and private entities in the restoration of important ecosystems for water preservation.
According to Nature Conservancy, In Valle del Cauca, the establishment of 1.232 hectares of protective isolates is intended, 880 hectares of silvopastoral systems, 97 hectares of living fences, 486 hectares of natural enrichment, 103 hectares of protective forests and 47 hectares of forests for domestic use, in addition to the release of 324 hectares for protection purposes.
Colombia and the Water Funds
In total, The country has seven Water Funds, a platform that integrates about 50 entities between the academy, private companies, public entities and NGOs.
Medellín, Cúcuta, Bogotá, Santa Marta, Cali and Cartagena. In addition, the NGO plans to create eight more Water Funds in the coming months.
In total, the investment for the water funds in the different Colombian cities is approximately 40 million dollars.
